What to wear in Yellowstone?

If you're traveling by plane, you might need to plan more carefully about what to bring with you to Yellowstone. It really depends on the time of the season and the activities you would like to do. If your goal is light hiking, wildlife watching, and bar hopping, it's one case. If you want to do rock climbing, fly fishing, and river rafting, it will be a totally different suitcase.

Of course, there are some general rules that will work for any high elevation and mountain areas—layers. Cody, Wyoming has 300 sunny days in a year and is a very dry area, so you probably will not need a rain jacket during summer months. However, we do have wind, very cold and very strong wind. Also, the elevation during your travel can go up to 9,000 feet (2,720 meters). As elevation goes up, temperature goes down, so you probably will need a nice warm jacket or hoodie. But if you forget, don't worry; there are plenty of stores even in the park where you can buy a nice, but overpriced, layer.

As I said, the sun is very active in Wyoming, so a long sleeve with SPF might also be a good idea. You will need comfortable tennis shoes for town exploring and waterproof hiking boots for the trail. Also, you might want to pack sandals for this hot summer weather.

For the evening, if you want to dine in a fine restaurant, jeans and a clean t-shirt will do it. Wyoming is very laid back; there is no dress code.

In any case, you don’t need to stress if you forgot something. Believe me, there will be lots of shopping opportunities, and you might also want to have some space in your luggage for those cowboy boots you might want to buy.
