Jackson Hole’s Town Square

Exploring Jackson Hole’s Town Square: Where History and Local Charm Meet

Jackson’s Town Square, also known as George Washington Memorial Park, is the beating heart of the town. Whether you’re here in the summer or winter, it’s a spot that’s hard to miss—and even harder to forget.

Summer Vibes at the Square

In the summer, Jackson’s Town Square is buzzing with life. You’ll find a mix of local businesses all around, perfect for a bit of shopping or grabbing a bite to eat. One of the coolest things to do here is hop on a stagecoach for a quick ride around the square. It’s a fun way to see the sights and feel a little bit of that Old West vibe.

If riding isn’t your thing, no worries—just take a leisurely stroll and soak up the atmosphere. There are picnic tables scattered around the square, making it a great spot to relax and enjoy a casual lunch.

Winter Fun on Ice

When winter comes, the square turns into a bit of a winter wonderland. They set up an ice skating rink right in the middle of the square, and it’s a perfect way to spend a winter afternoon. The whole area gets a cozy, festive feel with the lights and snow, and there’s nothing like warming up with a hot drink after a few laps on the ice.

What’s the Deal with the Elk Antler Arches?

Now, you can’t talk about Jackson’s Town Square without mentioning the famous Elk Antler Arches. These arches are probably the most photographed spot in town, and for good reason. The first one went up in 1953 thanks to the local Rotary Club, and the others followed between 1966 and 1969.

Building these arches is no small task. Each antler weighs between 5 to 10 pounds, and they’re all placed by hand around a steel frame. When an arch is finished, it’s holding somewhere between 10,000 to 12,000 pounds of antlers!

The best part? No elk are harmed in the process. The antlers are naturally shed and collected each year by the Jackson Hole Boy Scouts from the National Elk Refuge. It’s a great tradition that not only keeps the arches looking amazing but also supports the local community. Every 30 to 40 years, the antlers are replaced, so these arches stay in great shape.
