Old Trail Town

Things to do in Cody, Wyoming.

One of my favorite spots in Cody is Old Trail Town. It's a 6-acre complex - museum under the sky, complete with 28 buildings, seven gravesites, a museum of Western artifacts, and over 100 wagons and carriages. This place takes you back in time—it's actually the original location of downtown Cody, and all the buildings are authentic. There's even a cemetery on site.

Recently, they added a brothel! Yep, Old Trail Town now features a structure that used to be Rosie’s Roadhouse and Brothel. And in the future, they’re planning to add a church and a jail, so it’s only getting better.

What I love about this place is the exclusive collection of historic artifacts, furnishings, and other items that belonged to real people from the Wild West. The whole museum is set up like a western town, so you can cruise from one building to another, soaking up the history and learning about the people who lived back then. I like to check out the exhibitions in the houses and imagine what it would’ve been like to live in one of those cabins.

The cemetery is also pretty fascinating. It includes graves of notable figures like “Liver Eating” John Johnston (who Robert Redford portrayed in the movie Jeremiah Johnson), Buffalo Hunter Jim White, W.A. Gallagher and Blind Bill Hoolihan, and Belle Drewry.

They’re open from May 15 to September 30, 8:00 am to 6:00 pm.

Tickets are $12 for adults,

$11 for seniors,

$6 for children ages 6-12, and free for kids 5 and under.

Active military members also get in for free.

I usually spend around 2 hours there because I like to read everything, but if you’re just walking through with a light attention to detail, it shouldn’t take more than 45 minutes. Plus, it’s a great spot to snap some cool old-western-style photos. Old Trail Town is totally worth a visit—a great museum for all generations of travelers, and an awesome, educational spot.
